We had been hesitant to purchase a bread machine as reviews for all products range from wonderful to horrid. We finally decided on the West Bend 41200 because of the low price, the flexibility of multiple size loaves and the additional dough and jam features.In the month since purchase, we have used the bread machine 10 times, making 4 different types of breads ranging from traditional white to beer/jalapeno/cheese, sweet breads, pizza dough and jam. We have no complaints. Using the bread machine is actually easier than you are led to believe. All recipes say you must measure exactly, only use the ingredients listed and follow step by step. This is not true. We have modified recipes slightly by adding/reducing liquid if the dough or the proportions do not seem proper, we have substituted ingredients; using all-purpose flour, not bread flour; substituting an equal amount of skim milk in place of the water and dry milk; etc. We find no appreciable difference in the quality of the product. I bought one of these, despite a few reservations based on the reviews, because I figured it was cheap and I could always return it if it didn’t work. Which it didn’t.

Actually, it worked for about two weeks. During that time I used it five times. During the fifth time, I noticed that the digital display had gone blank, even though there was still an hour to go in the cycle. The machine had died. It had mixed the bread and, apparently, kneaded it the second time, and then given up the ghost. The dough had risen to the very top of the pan, but it wasn’t going to get baked in there. I took it out and popped it into a loaf pan, let it rise a little more, and baked it in my oven. It turned out fine.

The machine, though, was beyond saving. Nothing I did could revive it. (And I did check to make sure the outlet was working.) So I’m returning it. Fortunately, Amazon’s return system seems to be pretty good. No hassle so far, anyway.

So I would advise against buying this machine. It’s too cheap. The quality is poor. Those other reviewers who complained about the shape of the loaf and the way the top caves in were right. The design of the pan seems wrong.

I’m giving it one star only because you can’t give zero. (I tried to.)

If I decide to get another machine, I’ll probably go back to the Breadman–I had one that worked great for eight years. Today I made a loaf of bread using my Kitchenaid mixer and my oven, though, and it was easy and fun. Maybe I’ll stick with that. Make up a big batch of dough on the weekends and stick it in the fridge. [...]

I bought this machine for my daughter. She loves this machine! I tried it myself while visiting her. I made four batches of bread! We just kept eating it! I let the machine make the dough and then I removed the dough to make rolls. YUM! I recommend it heartily.

Making bread in this machine was even easier than I thought. As a baking neophyte, I purchased this girl thinking that it would provoke a curiosity within me to pursue baking other concoctions. It’s had the opposite effect. I feel like a first class passenger peacefully resting while my pilot delivers me to my vacation playground. All I had to do was check in, walk through the terminal and conform to my seat. Assuming that you can properly measure ingredients and read an instruction manual, I don’t see how this machine will disappoint. Since purchasing this last month we have cranked out 10 loaves, 3 pizza crusts and it has consistently performed flawlessy each time. Only improvement that I would urge, would be to make the bread pan longer than what is provided. If your aim is for easy, no-fuss baking then buy yourself one of these.
